Safer School Zone Bill breezes through Senate

SB 1151, the Safer School Zone Bill inspired by challenges that children face getting safely to school in the Central Valley, passed off of the Senate floor yesterday 32-0 after unanimous passage through both Senate Transportation and Housing and Senate Appropriations Committees. The bill will increase safety for school students walking and bicycling to school by adding a $35 fine increase to traffic violations in school zones and committing that additional revenue to school safety projects and programs through the state Active Transportation Program.
Though the bill sailed through the Senate, it could still encounter challenges in the Assembly and will need broad public support to ensure Governor Brown signs it.
