National Bike to School Day 2014 Registration Now Open
Join tens of thousands of children, parents, school officials, and many other supporters for the third annual Bike to School Day on May 7, 2014.
The National Center for Safe Routes to School announces National Bike to School Day registration is now open. The momentum for this event keeps building and last year a total of 1,705 schools across the country participated, an 80 percent increase since the inaugural event in 2012. Schools, parents and community members can now register a Bike to School Day event at www.walkbiketoschool.org.
Bike to School Day is a national event that gives communities across the country the opportunity to join together in bicycling to school on the same day. It is part of the movement for year-round safe routes to school and encourages bicycling to school as a healthy way for kids and families to make their school commute.
Although Bike to School Day is a one-day event, it is leading to long-term change. Students, parents and teachers are using Bike to School day to inspire transformation in their communities. Last year, tens of thousands of children made further connections than just their trip home to school. Students participated in the Global Youth Traffic Safety month and developed youth peer-to-peer education projects, supported increased enforcement of traffic laws, and advocated for stronger laws to protect young people on the roads. Approximately 64 percent of event organizers reported that their Bike to School Day event was a part of an ongoing bicycle program.
National Bike to School Day joins the excitement surrounding National Bike Month, led by the League of American Bicyclists each May, and builds off the 17 years of success of International Walk to School Day.
Bike to School Day event registration is free and open to all individuals and/or organizations planning a 2014 Bike to School Day event in the United States. Registering a Bike to School Day event provides organizers access to a variety of downloadable materials, including stickers, certificates, badges, classroom activities, and a chance to win exciting giveaways to be announced soon.
The event website includes Bike to School Day and Walk to School Day event planning resources, as well Map-a-Route, a GIS-powered mapping tool. Map-a-Route allows users to create and share bicycling or walking routes to school via easy-to-use maps.
