Data – Bicycle Infrastructure around LAUSD Elementary Schools

John Tangenberg, one of our Safe Routes to School Southern California Regional Network collaborators, decided to honor Bike to School day this year with a cool map! From John directly:
“To honor Bike to School day as a GIS geek, I decided to take a look at how many of the 509 Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) elementary schools had bike infrastructure directly serving the school site. I queried for bicycle infrastructure within 100 yards of the school site.” See insights below.
Question: How many LAUSD elementary schools are directly served by any bicycle infrastructure, such as bicycle lanes, racks or signage?

Answer and insights:
- A total of 106 ( ~20%) LAUSD schools had any bicycle infrastructure within 100 yards of the site.
- Then adding in the proposed bike routes into the definition of “any bicycle infrastructure”, the total number of LAUSD schools increases to 119.
- This clearly needs more detailed study. Yet from this first view of the state of things around elementary schools demonstrates the lack of bicycle planning around these sites. Even the lack of attention given to elementary schools as a bicycling destination by transportation and bike planners.
