April 18 Community Meeting: UCLA Study on Health Effects Related to Changes to State Gas Tax

California’s gasoline tax provides funding for building and maintaining the state’s roads, bridges and transit systems.  Gas tax revenues are shrinking as a result of increased fuel efficiency, but people are driving more than ever.  This means more wear and tear to our freeways, roads and bridges, but less funds to repair and maintain them. Several states are considering changes to their state gas taxes.
One alternative is a mileage-based user fee (MBUF).  Would it be more or less fair than the current gas tax?  Would this change how much people drive?  Would it change the amount and distribution of environmental effects associated with road use, such as air pollution, noise and congestion?

With funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the UCLA Health Impact Project in partnership with the UCLA Lewis Center and the California Pan-Ethnic Network (CPEHN) are holding town hall meetings throughout the state to listen to what you have to say about possible changes to California’s gas tax, including possible replacement of the gas tax with mileage-based user fees.  We are studying how changes to the gas tax might affect peoples’ health and well-being. We would like your input to guide our analysis and develop policy recommendations.
