State Group working to improve Bicycle Safety – looking for new members

Caltrans Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP): Challenge Area 13

Challenge Area 13 is a team working together to address bicycling safety. This is an effort coordinated and led by Caltrans, as is part of the Agency’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan. Among the many tasks of this committee is addressing issues relating to Safe Routes to School efforts. The committee would benefit from more members and greater participation, we are helping Caltrans get the word out on this group and are encouraging people to consider joining.

The group is currently scheduled to meet every other month for the remainder of the year. The meetings are held in Sacramento (Veterans Affairs Building), but are also held via conference call.

June 15  9:30am – 11:30am
August 10  9:30am – 11:30am
October 19   9:30am – 11:30am

Wondering what the group is working on? See their summary of Suggested New Action Items.

In 2004, California bicyclist fatalities per million population were 23 percent above the national rate, 3.06 compared to the 2.47 national average. The number of bicyclist fatalities per year has been holding relatively steady over the last 10 years, however, improvement was shown in 2009. Challenge Area 13 has developed strategies and action items designed to reduce the number of bicyclist fatalities. These range from increasing bicycle helmet use through education and promotion to education components such as expanding Safe Routes to School programs. Of the initial 11 action items for Challenge Area 13, only 3 remain active, and those are expected to be completed very soon.

So, in order to continue the momentum generated by the Strategic Highway Safety Plan, Challenge Area 13 is moving forward to develop and implement additional action items. What an exciting time to join this group — coming in at the ground level to explore new ideas, review new data and trends, evaluate the effectiveness and success of previous action items, propose new concepts, develop those concepts into potential action items, and begin the process of implementing those ideas.
