Spring streets demand more cycling, scootering and walking on school routes
Students, parents and other members of the Santa Monica and Malibu school district are invited to join in on the upcoming Bike It! Walk It! Day on Wednesday June 1st. Last October’s district-wide event got over 3200 (30 percent) of the district’s students walking, biking and taking the bus to school. On the 1st of June, all SMMUSD schools will be participating in BikeIt! Walk It! Day, even Santa Monica College!
Resources are available on www.bikeitday.com to help make your Bike It! Walk It! Day a positive experience:
- Maps showing routes to each school
- Handout with tips on riding your bike in traffic
- When people ride bikes, great things happen
- Bike Trains explained
Sustainable Streets will host Bike Skills Brush-Up Classes during home-base at the middle schools, as well as a FREE Bike Skills Workshop on Saturday, 21 May at Santa Monica High School (SAMOHI) from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. offering rules of the road, tips on selecting safer routes to school, basic bike maintenance and bike skills practice to help avoid crashes. The event is for parents of all schools, for students of grades 5-12, and volunteers who are willing to ride with kids on Bike It! Day as “bike train drivers.” The SAMOHI campus bike entrance is via Michigan Avenue. If you plan on attending, please make a reservation by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org and have your parents complete the registration/release form found on the Sustainable Streets website.
Bike It! Day needs all the help it can get to make getting to school healthier, safer and more fun for everyone! We are in need parent support to keep these events running smoothly. If you are able to volunteer on or before June 1st, please send a message to email@example.com. Meetings for parent volunteers take place after school — John Adams on May 17th and Lincoln on May 18th.
