Call for Applications for Fall 2011 Activities Mini-Grants

National Center for Safe Routes to School: Applications Due 5/18

Now in its fourth award cycle, the National Center for Safe Routes to School has announced that they are accepting applications for 25 mini-grants of $1,000 each that will be used for fall 2011 projects. Each mini-grant will support the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) goal: enabling and encouraging children to safely walk and bicycle to school. Nationwide SRTS programs are implemented by parents, students, schools, community leaders, and local, state, and tribal governments to further drive the SRTS mission.

Mini-grant applications are due Wednesday, May 18, 2011.

The National Center’s SRTS mini-grant program, is seeking creative ideas that not only match the needs and interests of a school, but also provide ways to help improve safety and/or increase the number of students walking and rolling to school. Activities that will be funded may range from the nuts and bolts that help start or sustain a program, to new ideas that explore the variety of benefits of safe walking and bicycling within a community.

School Needs and Interests:  Engaging your community, as well as student and adult leaders, can produce helpful feedback when you are in the process of deciding on the changes that are needed in your school. This will also allow for creating a dialogue on how best to achieve these changes and long-term goals. What sort of walking and bicycling activities will promote change in your school or community? And how can you best promote creativity, innovation and leadership among your students?

Timeline for Activities:  Mini-grant activities should occur between August 1, 2011, and the end of the Fall 2011 semester.
